Employment in the Whiteriver Unified School District
Why Should You Teach For Us?
Located in eastern Arizona on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, the Whiteriver Unified School District has much to offer you. This public school district consists of five schools, including Alchesay High School, Canyon Day Junior High, and three K-6 schools: Whiteriver Elementary, Cradleboard Elementary, and Seven Mile Elementary School. The district also operates a preschool program for handicapped students.

The Whiteriver Unified School District has positive programs to provide the best possible education for students. Included in the special programs are school-wide federal programs, Indian Education programs, a K-3 and middle school At-Risk program, quality vocational and art programs, Alternative School program, Special Education program, and Dropout Prevention projects.

Besides the programs listed above, the district schools have an array of supportive extracurricular activities. There is exciting 3A East Interscholastic competition with nearby schools. The high school has its full share of athletic competition with football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track, cross country, baseball, and softball available to our students. The Junior High school competes in an athletic league in football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, track, and softball. The high school and the middle school support and sponsor a yearbook, band, newspaper, and many clubs to enhance the education of our students.

The district also stresses the preservation of Apache Culture and Language through the classroom and extracurricular activities. Apache teaching assistants are in many classrooms to ensure this and aid the teachers in daily tasks.
Federal funding provides for many benefits such as extra funds for classroom supplies, all-expense paid workshops, and professional development. Through the Northern Arizona University/Whiteriver ESL Fellowship Program, teachers can earn the required ESL Endorsement with all expenses paid, including tuition, books, and even housing/food fees if one needs to attend NAU in Flagstaff during the summer. Many courses are offered here in Whiteriver. NAU-Whiteriver and NAU in Show Low also both offer further education, including various Master's Degree programs.

WUSD is up-to-date in technology. Each school has a complete computer system. Free training is offered to teachers from the Technology Department. Many schools provide teacher with a laptop that they may use at school and at home.

WUSD also provides employment through addendums outside of the regular salary schedule.

Working with the Apache children of these schools is a joy and a challenge. Teaching here will remind you of the reason why you entered the teaching profession: to change lives and make a difference.

Come join us in the White Mountains! We are an equal-opportunity employer and are open to new ideas. If you sincerely wish to make a difference in the lives of children, Whiteriver Unified School District #20 would be honored to consider your application.
Why Move to the White Mountains?
The Whiteriver Unified School District is located on the most beautiful Reservation in Arizona, the White Mountain Apache Reservation. The Reservation is known for its beauty, from Sonoran Desert lowlands to its ponderosa pine and snowcapped peaks. The Reservation boasts many recreational activities such as hiking, camping, picnicking, boating, hunting, and fishing. The best skiing in the southwest is 45 minutes away at the Sunrise Ski Resort operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. The Tribe also runs the Hondah Casino 15 minutes from Whiteriver.

The people of the White Mountains enjoy all four seasons, including snow in the winter with moderate temperatures. Most of the year entails gorgeous blue skies.

Whether you live in Whiteriver in the school district's inexpensive teacher housing, or "up the hill" in the nearby towns of Pinetop/Lakeside or Show Low, you will always be surrounded by nature at its most beautiful. With the area's excellent real-estate market, you are sure to find a place to call home.

Show Low and Pinetop/Lakeside have a small-town atmosphere while still providing many amenities such as a variety of recreational opportunities, restaurants, shops, and stores, including Arizona's first Wal-Mart Super Center. The White Mountain area is only about four hours away from Phoenix, Arizona's largest city and state capital.

If you love small towns in the heart of nature and enjoy a variety of recreational activities, then the White Mountains were made for you.
